The culminating web project of a three month partnered residency at the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery (LBE), Establishing a Database Connection is part exhibition framework experimentation, part interface design interrogation. It examines how the digital file database of the LBE Gallery’s collection can be activated beyond the pure intention of data preservation and storage. Tasked to mine the gallery’s exhibition history, we explored the methods introduced in the 2009 LBE exhibition As much as possible given the time and space allotted. With an unexpected interface design stripped of conventional methods of search and navigation, Establishing a Database Connection enables its visitors to build spatial, relational constellations of connections between LBE collection artworks.
